The Turkey Leg Hut Standalone Mobile App Design

Overview

I was asked to design a mobile application for a restaurant in your favorite city. Houston is my favorite city and I chose The Turkey Leg Hut as the restaurant. It already has a web app so I decided to make a standalone mobile app.

Role

Project Lead

UX, UI, Visual Design, User Research, Prototyping & Testing

March 1, 2021-March 1, 2022

As the project lead for the Turkey Leg Hut Restaurant's mobile application, I oversaw the entire process, from conception to handoff. My role included designing the app's seamless user experience, intuitive interface, and virtual line feature.

User Research

Research Methods Used:

To better understand the users and their needs, I utilized a variety of research methods which included user interviews, usability studies, and a competative audit.

Overall, the insights gathered from these research methods were used to inform the design decisions and improve the overall user experience.

Target Audience

Personas

I conducted user interviews to gain qualitative insights and feedback from our target audience. These interviews allowed me to identify user goals, behaviors, and pain points, which were then used to inform the design decisions.

The Goals

Primary

The goal is to create a standalone mobile app for Turkey Leg Huts that's both seamless and engaging. This app will allow customers to easily place orders, view food options, make payments, and track their deliveries. With the app's virtual line feature, customers can also wait in line without a reservation.

Secondary

The ultimate goal is to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty by delivering a delightful and hassle-free experience through the Turkey Leg Huts mobile application.

Key Challenges

Olivia:

  1. Developing a virtual wait-in-line feature to eliminate long wait times and improve the dining experience for Olivia.

  2. Creating a user-friendly interface that allows Olivia to easily browse the menu and place orders.

  3. Ensuring the app is accessible and easy to use for users like Olivia who may have limited experience with technology.

Michael:

  1. High-quality photos and detailed descriptions: Michael wants to preview the food. The app must have high-quality photos and detailed descriptions of menu items to give her a good idea of what to expect.

  2. Reliable reviews and ratings: Michael values the opinions of others. The app needs to have a trustworthy review and rating system for users to share feedback.

  3. Virtual wait-in-line feature: Michael doesn't want to wait physically in Houston's weather. The app should have a virtual wait-in-line feature that saves his spot in the queue while she waits elsewhere.

Research

Usability Studies:

In addition to user interviews, we conducted usability studies to observe how users interacted with our product and to identify areas where they encountered difficulties. Through these studies, we were able to gather both qualitative and quantitative data about user behavior, preferences, and satisfaction. This data helped us understand how users interacted with our product and identify opportunities for improvement.

Design Strategy

Design Methods Used:

Throughout the design process, I followed a user-centered design approach, prioritizing user needs and feedback at every stage. We also utilized design thinking methodologies to help us identify user pain points and create a user-friendly and effective design.

Overall, the design process involved a combination of wireframes, low-fidelity prototypes, high-fidelity mockups, and user-centered design and design thinking methodologies to create a user-friendly and effective design.

Initial Designs

Wireframes

Our design process began with the creation of wireframes, which allowed us to map out the basic structure and layout of our product. We then created low-fidelity prototypes to test the functionality and flow of the product. These prototypes were used in usability studies to gather feedback and insights from users.

Low Fidelity Prototype

Based on feedback gathered from the wireframes, I then developed low-fidelity prototypes. These prototypes were used to test the functionality and flow of the product with users. I made changes based on feedback and continued to iterate the design until it was ready for high-fidelity prototyping.

High Fidelity Mockups

I then created high-fidelity mockups to test the visual design and interactions of the product. These mockups allowed me to gather feedback on more detailed aspects of the user experience.

Final Designs

Homescreen

To create a seamless and engaging mobile app, I needed to ensure that the app's design is user-friendly, with a clean and intuitive interface that allows customers to navigate through the different features easily.

Virtual Wait In Line Feature

The app's virtual line feature can be a game-changer, allowing customers to wait in line without a reservation. This can be particularly helpful during busy times or for customers who don't want to make a reservation.

View Food Menu

To showcase how the design decisions support the user needs and goals I created the food menu in an aesthetically pleasing manner, making it easier for customers to browse through the different food options.

Takeaways

Impact

The Turkey Leg Hut Restaurant Standalone Mobile Application will have a significant impact on customer experience by offering a seamless and intuitive way for customers to discover, explore, and order food. With the option of virtually waiting in line, customers can avoid long wait times and easily place orders, track their food delivery or pickup status. Additionally, the app's design will showcase the Turkey Leg Hut's menu, ambiance, and reputation, making the food look even more enticing. As studies have shown, customers tend to order more food through mobile apps when the visuals are appealing, making this app an effective tool for increasing sales and customer loyalty.

What I Learned

  • One of my biggest learnings from this project was that how time consuming usability studies can be between sorting the data and writing the scripts.

  • Getting a very diverse set of results help going over possabilites I never would have even considered.

  • the last but not the least thing I learned was a genuine interest in the work you’re doing will be the biggest motivation.

Next Steps

The next steps for this app is to add the food rating section, add the delivery section, inspect it, and pitch it to The Turkey Leg Hut.
